Frequently asked questions
What does the options profit/loss calculator show?
It shows the profit or loss of an option position or strategy at expiry across a range of underlying prices, along with the maximum profit, maximum loss, breakeven points and the net premium paid or received.
Why does it say “Unlimited”?
Some positions, such as a bought call, have no upper limit on profit, and some, such as a sold (short) call, have no upper limit on loss as the price rises.
Where do the sample premiums come from?
When you pick a strategy, sample premiums are filled in from a simple pricing model so the chart has something to show. They are not live prices — replace them with the actual premiums from your trading terminal.
Does this include brokerage and taxes?
No. The payoff is before brokerage, STT, exchange charges, stamp duty and GST. See our tariff for brokerage and other charges.
Does it show profit or loss before expiry?
No. The chart shows the payoff on the expiry day only. Before expiry, option prices also depend on time left, volatility and interest rates, so actual profit or loss can differ.
Risk disclosure on derivatives: 9 out of 10 individual traders in the equity Futures and Options segment incurred net losses (SEBI study). Options trading involves substantial risk; selling (writing) options can result in losses larger than the premium received.
