Frequently asked questions

What are the current capital gains tax rates on shares and equity mutual funds?

For sales on or after 23 July 2024, short-term gains (held 12 months or less) are taxed at 20% and long-term gains (held more than 12 months) at 12.5% on the amount above ₹1.25 lakh a financial year. Budget 2026 kept these rates unchanged. Health & education cess of 4%, and surcharge where it applies, are added.

What rates apply to sales before 23 July 2024?

Sales before 23 July 2024 were taxed at 15% for short-term gains and 10% for long-term gains. The calculator picks the rate from your sell date.

What is the ₹1.25 lakh exemption?

The first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains from listed equity shares and equity mutual funds in a financial year is tax-free. If you have already booked long-term gains this year, enter them so the calculator uses only the exemption that is left.

What is grandfathering?

For shares and equity fund units bought before 1 February 2018, gains made up to 31 January 2018 are not taxed. The cost is taken as the higher of what you paid and the lower of the 31 January 2018 price and your sale price.

Can I deduct brokerage and STT?

Brokerage and other costs of selling can be deducted as transfer expenses. Securities Transaction Tax (STT) cannot be deducted.

Why might my actual tax be different?

The calculator looks at one sale in isolation. Your actual tax also depends on your other income, the basic exemption limit, losses you can set off and your residential status. Please consult a tax advisor before filing.

Disclaimer: This calculator gives an estimate for listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds on which STT is paid, using the rates shown under the result. It does not account for your other income, the basic exemption limit, rebates, set-off of losses or special cases, and is not tax advice.
